Z9A is a light high speed multi-purpose 10 to 14 seats helicopter manufactured by Harbin Aircraft Industry Group under licence of Dauphin SA 365N1 from Aerospatiate of France. It is equipped with two WZ-8A engines manufactured by South Power Corporation of China under licence from Turbomeca of France. Each engine has a maximum emergency power of 734 SHP.

Z9A meets with American FAA's FAR 29 categories A and B for IFR and VFR flights. In 2001, Z9A obtained CAAC's TC and PC. Z9A is now widely used in general aviation in China with uses such as passenger and cargo transportation, external sling, off-shore support, emergency medical service, aerial photography, sight-seeing, and forest fire protection. Z9A is also a good choice for paramilitary missions such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue(SAR), anti-smuggling patrol and law reinforcement, etc.

In December 1999, a Z9A flew into the extreme climate conditions of the Arctic Pole with China's scientific research ship and successfully fulfilled its mission of logistic transportation. In 2001, a Z9A flew to Antarctica for the same mission.
